Seems like the astronauts should be wearing some kind of helmet, maybe one filled with water, I think I read somewhere that water can help.

I think it could block some of the weaker cosmic rays at least.

The visors and windows of spacecraft are tinted with gold which blocks them. Don't know about the rest of the helmet.

I think the gold visors only protect your eyes from the Sunlight, I don't think that would be a thick enough layer of gold to protect from cosmic rays. But I have not researched it.
