do you think a mute button would further fragment the small community here or will that be offset by a more pleasant experience for those using mute?
replied 1794d
mute button FTW
replied 1793d
I don't think that it would fragment anything, but the opposite. It would make memo a lot better. Personally I don't want to see flat earther crap and spam.
replied 1793d
think you're right though, mute would make a nicer community

Only by hiding the non-nice parts Censorship in the service of entertainment is how we got where we are.
replied 1793d
but this (afaik) would be implemented by each individual not by a centralized service.
Simon Van Gelder
replied 1793d
It would only be implemented by services (since the post on-chain cannot be "muted"). True, users would be the ones "blocking/muting" others, but it's only small step to a g-line.
replied 1793d
if you have the personal choice to mute people how do you end up at "g-town"? by having your attention on memo now you're choosing to 'mute' the rest of the internet.

I don't have much of an issue with any individual memo client allowing this functionality, but once these blocks/ignores are on-chain they become indicators that can be abused.
replied 1792d
You can't censor onchain, without majority of miners cooperating to censor.

True, but memo is the conjunction of two networks: blockchain and humanity. "Muting/Blocking" on *EITHER* side (via miners or popular opinion) endangers this intersection's capacity.
replied 1792d
Everyone would manage their own mute lists.
replied 1792d
yeah, agree, I dont see any reason to put mutes on-chain (though not having them on chain does add friction when switching between clients)
replied 1793d
or g-line. whatever idk what that even is. government censorship?
Simon Van Gelder
replied 1792d
IRC global ban (sever side ignore).
replied 1792d
hmm, havent heard of this & dont know what it is. is this/would this be like a blacklist of addresses?
replied 1793d
u Can't compare the 2 imo.
Simon Van Gelder
replied 1793d
"the 2" being?
replied 1793d
censorship and the mute function.
replied 1793d
by fragment I mean divide up the few people who are here (ie how many transactions would be lost by not having to argue with flat earth ppl).
replied 1793d
The inflow of non-retarded peeps should compensate for the lack of pointless flat earth debates.
replied 1793d
Rather than ban them outright, I would just let them post in a flat earth topic only.
replied 1793d
Restricting anyone like that would render this platform useless.

An option to hide comments from specific users should be adequate in my opinion.
replied 1793d
we cant ban them or restrict their access or censor them. just ignore (with or without a mute function)
