When BCH goes up BTC miners switch to BCH then dump on exchanges to buy more BTC. It is easier for bigger pools to mine empty blocks. https://memo.cash/a/0b59bf4172

Some miners do the opposite. Mine BTC and use it to buy more BCH as a long game.

Yes, their goal is to acquire more BTC. Sometimes it becomes more profitable to mine BCH because they use the same hashing algorithm.
