I've actually been trying to get a phone with KaiOS. I don't really need much when it comes to cellular devices. But all the good ones with KaiOS are pricey or not available in NA.

Oh no :( I am sorry they are pushing for an account. But the apps should be usable with any account, if they are really free software.
Just a default sort of thing these days,
at least they seem to be making a serious effort.
Simply not using such apps is probably the best strategy.
