The majority of people think that other people will pay the tax and they will get free stuff. That's the main reason why progressive income tax exists.
On a somewhat related topic of other "hidden costs", inflation, sometimes called a hidden tax, is also problematic and somewhat surprising.
My favorit thing is when american tradcucks argue that they have ~12% tax in usa because thats the personal income tax or so, meanwhile they indirectly pay 80% of their salary as tax.
